I don't think "killing" is a good metaphor for "letting go". Maybe the Russians killed the ghost of Lenin by smashing his statues, but to me that's not the same as letting him go.

How about "Kill the Ghost" = "to vilify and then violently expunge all traces of a person in your past and move on"?
