: We were having a discussion about Bristolian words at work, and someone asked where the word Daps comes from (as in trainers, runners etc). Does anyone know?

: Also, I confuse many people outside (and some inside!) of Bristol by saying "Cwpee down" (I have no idea how to spell the first word, but someone said it may originate from Wales) meaning bend/crouch down. Anyone any ideas on this one?!

I must plead American on this one. In a book I have, "British English A to Zed" by Norman W. Schur, it had "dab" (with a b) meaning "to be especially adept at," "dab in the hand" meaning "bribe," and "dabs" meaning fingerprints. But no daps.

In another reference, I found an entry saying that "daps" in Black English means a soul handshake.
