Devil's wages

Could someone please tell me the origin and meaning of the phrase "devil's wages?" Thanks!

I'll look in my references. But first a guess. I wonder if it has to do with the following Bible verse:

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
