: Did it originate in Shakespeare's plays? Admittedly after the sketchiest of searches, the earliest usages that I can find of this are mid to late 1800's - Robert Browning and Robert Louis Stevenson. I'm sure someone will come up with earlier, though.

The OED has discovered a printed use of this word in 1530, but they do not report any usage by Shakespeare. (They don't report every appearance of a word, but usually report a use by Shakespeare.) SS
