'bout ship' is merely short for bring about the ship-change course in otherwords. Dating from the days of sail it is still used sometimes, as in: A pilot saying to the deck officer: "I am going to bring her about soon. (change direction of the ship.) He will then give the new course, "right easy , hold on 180, for instance.
