If you wear a white shirt, wear it...

I heard this many years ago in East London. I think it means if you have political allegiances, declare them. Has anyone else heard of this phrase or know anything more about its origin? Is it a white shirt as opposed to a black shirt (as in Mosley's black shirts), for instance?
