: I'm not sure it's absolutely incorrect, but it's strange and awkward. I'd say "the life of Bill, rummy player extraordinaire," or reword the text some other way.

It's a cumbersome phrase. Try " rummy-player-extrodinaire Bill's life..." . Lots of folks don't like to hypenate, but I think it helps. The hyphen links multiple words into a single expression.
