A question of meaning, for a change

Posted by Miri Barak on April 21, 2004

the car builder speaks after he one of his successful cars, from an old Plymoth 54' which got a lot of attention also for its engineering.

"Well one of the things the race division was interested in was the way that we had brought the air into the engine and, uh, they asked, they started asking real technical questions about how it flowed and if it performed okay. And we had to tell them well it performs good for us *but you got to remember we're in an alley somewhere building this car"*.

My questio concerns only the last sentence. what does he mean by saying, they were in an alley?

Thank you very much
