Last Ditch Attempt

Posted by Jamie A. Woods on April 20, 2004

I was using this phrase in my history notes and it started me to wondering the origin of this phrase.
Does it refer to the battles of World War One? Would it be an offensive saying or a defensive saying? The trenches of World War I were very extensive and many existed as fall-back positions for a defending force.
Just curious if anyone knows for sure.
Thank you.
