: This phrase is tormenting me to find its origin. I recall seeing it in, of all places, a field book from the '60's about plants and animals:

: "...whose alabaster cities gleam
: undimmed (or undimm'd) by human tears."

: Anyone?

America, the Beautiful

Samuel Ward, 1882

4. O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good
With brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

: Thanks...
