: : : : Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

: : : : I am away from my library and a coworker just asked me if Freud really said that. Anyone know?

: : : And a woman is only a woman, but a good Cigar is a Smoke.
: : : From The Betrothed by Rudyard Kipling

: : In _Nice Guys Finish Seventh_ , Ralph Keyes attributes it to Sigmund Freud.
: : I can't find it in any of his books.

: "Nice Guys Finish Seventh", huh? Great. The other day I e-mailed William Safire and told him Leo Durocher never said that and that Safire's book was wrong. Now some guy writes a book with that title.

: I am going into my attic tonight and dig out Durocher's book. I swear when I read it as a kid Durocher straightened out that whole thing and he didn't say "...finish seventh". I will post the page number and everything (or a mea culpa).

"sometimes a cigar is more than a cigar" quote, Monica Lewinski 1998, USA.
