: Guess. From boxing. Outside the boxing ring, when someone's knocked out they tend to be dragged away from the scene, thereby 'cleaning' the floor.

: My guess is that it is pretty old( maybe even older than boxing) because there is a German saying that means the same:
"Mit jmdn den Boden abwischen."
