: The midwest part of the US has provided a lot of colorful expressions. The close-to-the-earth agriculture background leads to some wonderful expressions. --- One of my favorites --- when it is obvious that someone has done a lot of preparation for an event or occasion it is said that "someone's put a lot of hay down".
: Is this used anywhere else in the civilized world?
I can't speak for the civilized world, but out here in California I've never heard that one, even though my parents came from the Midwest.
