: I take exception to the origin shown for "caught by the short and curlies." I believe this refers to being grasped by the short and curly hairs at the scruff of the neck. I am quite certain that the listing origin is incorrect.

Few people in Northern Europe - where English evolved - were blessed/cursed with short curly hairs on the neck. I could accept that were there such a saying in Swahili then its origin could well be the hairs on the neck but as for all those straight haired, or even bald, Englishmen, I think not.
