Someone asked me this and I can't seem to find it on Yahoo or Google.

Does anyone know where the phrase "making out" comes from?

Don't know, but I'm pretty sure it's American. We Australians have many other terms for it (not all of them fit for publication).

MAKE OUT - Make out - kiss (Mainstream 1950s). Make out - To kiss in a sustained and passionate manner (Mainstream 1960s). "Flappers 2 Rappers: American Youth Slang" by Tom Dalzell (Merriam-Webster Inc., Springfield, Md., 1996).
