: ESC is absolutely right. "Busting someone's chops" can be used figuratively as well as literally, and I realized that as soon as I had posted my followup. Alas, I have not figured out how to edit my submission without getting an unwanted second copy. I must say, however, that busting someone's chops, even literally, never suggested to me actually breaking their jaw, let alone both jaws.
