: I recently was reply to an email, from one of you guys actually, and I said that my partner and I are going to the US next year for a gander. I meant we're going for a look. But does anyone know why a gander?

Just a quick guess:
A gander is a goose.
A goose has a long neck.
So maybe "taking a gander" is the act of stretching your neck like a goose to look at something?
