: : I need to get information about this phrase and where it originated from. Please if you have any comments please help. I need to write a paper on where it came from. thanks

: RISE AND SHINE - "Get up (out of bed) and show some verve. It is what you say to someone who is more likely to get up yawning and moving groggily. Your advice is to be like the sun. This one seems to have originated with hearty noncommissioned officers waking up the privates at the usual military hour of 5 or 6 a.m. as suggested by the 'Recruiters' Bulletin' of the U.S. Marine Corps in 1916: 'He rapped at the door and in stentorian tones cried, 'Rise and shine.Wiggle a toe." From "Dictionary of Cliches" by James Rogers (Wings Books, Originally New York: Facts on File Publications, 1985). Page 218.

: It may have come from a song. Another reference lists the phrase (no date of origin) under "Anonymous Spirituals": "Rise and shine and give God the glory/ For the year of Jubilee. (Rise and Shine). From "Bartlett's Familiar Quotations," seventeenth edition, by John Barlett and Justin Kaplan, general editor (Little, Brown and Co., Boston, 2002). Page 863.

: A child's version is online at http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Glade/8851/s12_8.htm Accessed September 25, 2003. (Original Source: "Wee Sing Around the Campfire; The Funny Songbook" by Esther Nelson. Also found in "The Spirit of Singing" by Mardi Tindal & Kate Middleton ISBN 0-929032-85-3) The song begins:

: Rise and shine and give God the glory glory.
: Rise and shine and give God the glory glory.
: Rise and shine and give God the glory glory.
: Children of the Lord.

From the Bible:
Isaiah 60:1
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.
