There's no simple answer for these two similar words; each is used in various idiomatic ways. I think I would recommend you go to www.onelook.com/ and type in first one word and then the other. Onelook will return a list of definitions and usages from several different sources. Some of these will be more helpful than others, but you should glance through each reference cited. You'll see there's a great deal of overlap in both the meanings and uses of the two words, but the distinctions in their idiomatic use will gradually become clear.
