RAW VEGETARIANS - Raw vegetarians or ".Raw foodists believe the Western lifestyle - combining lots of cooked, processed foods with little exercise - leads to disease. Cooked foods, they believe, provide too few vitamins and minerals and require too much energy to digest. Raw foods, they say, are the foods that the human body is best adapted to eat. Some eat only fruit. Some eat only "living foods" - sprouted seeds and nuts. Some eat a diet of about 60 percent to 90 percent raw foods, and others go whole hog (so to speak). Most are skeptical of current medical wisdom and its nutrition recommendations embodied in the USDA food pyramid. There are some major differences between the food pyramid and the raw food diet, which does not include bread, eggs, dairy or meat. The idea of eating only raw food has been around since the early 1900s but seems to have been a tough sell to the mainstream." The Courier Journal, Louisville, Ky. June 11, 2003.
