: to "splurge" meaning to spend money on something that you really
can't afford,,, to be extravagant. As in "lets splurge and go to
a fancy restaurant tonight"
: Any ideas on the origin?
splurge -- noun. 1830, ostentatious display; perhaps a blend of
"splash" and "surge." The sense of an extravagant indulgence in
spending is found in 1928... (From "The Barnhart Concise Dictionary
of Etymology" by Robert K. Barnhart, HarperCollins Publishers, New
York, 1995).
