Infamous publications

It was once believed that those born poor were made that way by God (also called Divine Providence), and for a poor person to try and "better themselves", meaning to try to improve their position in Society, meant that that person was being selfish and rebellious against God's laws.

Publications/newspapers that tried to encourage the poor to live better were disliked by the wealthy people who felt threatened by these publications.
