Got the red ass

Does anyone know where the phrase "got the red ass" might have come from. It is used to connote someone getting his dander up, i.e., "He got the red ass and began telling everyone off". ANY help would be appreciated. I am in Louisiana and I think that it might be a regional saying. Has anyone else heard this one before?
