Right Hand/Left Hand

In "The Sweet Smell of Success", J. J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster) says to Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis), "My right hand hasn't seen my left hand in thirty years." Any idea what this claim might mean? It has been puzzling me for years.
