: I was just browsing the IMDb and found some eight movies, the earliest from 1913, the titles of which are either "East Is East" or some pun there-on. And so, I was wondering whether "east is east" is or is part of some famous proverb or some thing.

EAST IS EAST, AND WEST IS WEST, AND NEVER THE TWAIN SHALL MEET - "People of very different cultures are not ever likely to understand each other fully. The proverb was coined in 1889 by Rudyard Kipling in 'The Ballad of East and West.'." From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y.
