:Old Dan Tucker was a real person, who resided in Georgia before 1843. The Atlanta Journal or the Atlanta Constitution (before they were consolidated)did a long story on him in a Sunday edition, I believe it was, sometime in the 1970's. Like most other folks from the South, all the olderpersons when I was very young knew the songs, various vbersions, and sang them often at family gatherings in and around Pinola, Mississippi. The Lee family (my version( came to Mississippi from southwest Georgia, around Ft. Gaines, in the late 1830's or early 1840's, originally from an area which was once a part of Colonial Virginia and is now a part of North Carolina. I never learned if they learned of Dan Tucker at the time, or later. Old Dan was what was once called "crazy."
