: My father is fond of useing the expression "****ting in tall cotton." to describe someone who has it easy or is "on top of the game".

: Could anyone tell me the origin of this phrase?

From the Texas cotton fields, "tall cotton" derived from a wet spring, hot and dry summer, and maximum plant growth and boll yield, hence, "tall cotton" stood well for a good harvest and money in the bank. To defecate in "tall cotton" would be tantamount to wiping one's arse with a hundred-dollar bill. Did your Dad ever use the phrase "fair to middlin'?"
