Your mother wears combat boots!

My girlfriend said this to me the other day, LOL. It made me wonder where it came from. Is it an Army thing? A jab at implied lesbianism? Something that infers she's homely? It sounds like something from the 1940's or 50's. Anyone have any thoughts?
