: The literal meaning is about gravity: throw most objects in the air, and they will fall to the ground. But it has been applied to virtually everything else, too: the stock market, the price of (you-name-it), someone's rise to power, etc. Common sense leads us to expect that no trend continues forever. The mighty will fall. The proud will be humbled. In time, the feather in the wind will come to earth.

However, the reverse is not often true. I've not noticed the meek having inherited the earth as yet.
