GOLF - Gentlemen Only - Ladies Forbidden

Help. Is this true or not??

We just listened to a commedian in Las Vegas who told this story, saying that it was true, and then basing a few jokes on this "truth":

Golf was invented in Scotland. The name "GOLF" came from a sign over the first golf "club house" in Scotland that stated, "Gentlemen Only - Ladies Forbidden." Could this be the true origin of the word "GOLF"?
