In addition to the many interesting posts above I would like to add George Carlin's hilarious dissertation on S**t from thirty years ago, wherein he discusses numerous phrases containing the word and points out that we now use the term s**t to mean anything except its literal definition (defecation). I believe it was on his AM/FM album.
