Thinking out of the box- where did it come from?

Hi there
My mother is puzzling over this for a class (she is a teacher) and I am trying to help her out. I found some reference to this expression in old forum postings, but no real answer to the question, 'where does this expression come from.' It is very trendy (annoyingly so), but where did it originate? Is it a product of the cybermarket or does it have older roots?
