: : PLUs -- In a review of "The Shaping of Southern Culture: Honor, Grace, and War 1760s-1880s" (University of North Carolina Press) by Bertram Wyatt-Brown, reviewer Thomas T. Noland Jr. wrote, ".(the author) explores the paradox that honor and grace were not meant for everybody in the antebellum South, but only for 'PLUs' -- people like us, white and well-born."
: : Noland also writes, "The role of honor, grace and violence in the shaping of Southern culture continues to survive, despite the dispiriting 'anschluss' of Wal-Marts, Piggly Wigglys and golf courses."
: : What is "anschluss"?
: The annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938.
