I am interested in the origin of the phrase "Dead man walking " can anyone help?

when those on death row are taken out of their cells for any reason. The earden will shout as the condemmed man is walking 'dead man walking'- It is I believe to warn other wardens, but also to reinforce that in the eyes of the world , the prisoners are 'dead already.
