I haven't been able to find anything on the phrase "have a nice day." I know there is a phrase book by that title. Keep checking Phrase Finder and maybe someone will know the origin. I did learn that "have a good night" has been said since colonial times in the U.S. Perhaps the newer phrase is just a variation on that.
