: : : Can anyone explain the origin of the phrase "For/As the crow flies"-distance?
: : It simply means "in a direct line, without having to make diversions for obstacles on the ground".

Does anyone know why 'crow'? From my own observations, I am not aware that crows fly any more directly than other birds.
