: Surely it is from the fact that I always emerge from a bender with the bends. "Pop me in the hyperbaric chamber, honey. I'll feel fine in no time."

All I could find was that "bender" was originally a nautical term for period of drunkeness and that the term probably came from the bending of the elbow.
